The bravest part of Sal Khan’s visionary TED talk, How AI could Save (Not Destroy) Education [May, 2023] is the bold assertion that we can no longer put off deciding how to utilize its power. Ignoring it will not slow its acceleration and passively “hoping for the best” will put us at a grave disadvantage against those who harness its potential for less ethical purposes.
It is a sobering reality.
It is here and now.
However the crux of this rather exciting, presentation- chock full of practical applications- is the myriad positive possibilities for both student and educator alike.
This note records the second half of the talk: I hope it continues to highlight the various facets of the developing AI technologies whilst outlining the cautions and controversies inherent in its unfiltered ambiguities.
Have you watched Khan’s talk?
What are your feelings about AI in our classrooms?
If you are an educator, does Khan’s argument go part way towards annulling fears or is he avoiding our biggest hurdles?
Let’s join the discussion!
